Automated
Ultrasonic C-Scan for Corrosion/Erosion Detection using Large Structure
Inspection (LSI) System.
Many large structures in process environments are subject to
internal corrosion and/or erosion. These processes can cover areas that are
small in comparison to the overall area of the structure thus making
conventional inspection techniques, such as manual UT, subject to statistical
uncertainty, at best, and misleading conclusions, at worst.
For this cases QSL-Plus uses the Large Structure
Inspection (LSI) System manufactured by
NDT
Automation. An automated, programmable,
configurable ultrasonic C-Scan inspection system, the LSI provides a C-scan
image of the remaining wall thickness in tanks, pressure vessels and piping.
This powerful magnetic crawler, has steering capabilities that
can save the cost of erecting expensive scaffolding to gain access to the same
areas. The overall result of utilizing this cost-effective system is
that it allows us to collect more data with higher quality than manual
ultrasonic inspection does.
The LSI System can be used to scan the condition of large areas
at relatively low-resolution settings and still have the sensibility to
identify small indications. The speed at which the system scans and records
thickness data makes it a cost-effective solution for corrosion and lamination
detection. In the high-resolution mode very fine details in the contour of the
corrosion can be seen. This is an essential tool that enables the system to
"zero-in" on areas of concern and produce a clear picture of specific
indications which allows analysis of the type, size and quantity of defects
found.
